Video Lenses
The lenses are the most important part of the camera, and the proper use of the lens is the key to successful video photography.
"Zoom" means that the lens can magnify the image. By contrast, a "fixed" lens cannot glide between different magnifications, for example, binoculars, disposable still cameras and our own eyes.
Typical zoom lenses:
1) Telephoto is the term used when maximizing the zoom magnification on the lenses. Binoculars, for example, have a telephoto setting, but it's fixed, not a zoom.
2) Normal is the term used for an amount of magnification that approximates what our eyes can see.
3) Wide angle is the term when minimizing magnification on the lenses so that we have a wider field of view.
When describing a zoom setting the term focal length is used and it's measured by an assigned number correspondent to each level of magnification. Telephoto relates to a large focal length number like 100, for example. Wide angle, by contrast, refers to a smaller number like 10.
Telephoto settings compress distance, so things that are far apart in real life seem closer together when viewed through a telephoto lens setting. This can be used to reinforce the idea of a crowded space for example.
Telephoto lens settings exaggerate camera movement, so when shooting with a telephoto lens setting one should use a tripod.
The last important characteristic of telephoto lenses is that it is more difficult to focus on this setting, but it can be purposely done to limit the range of subjects in focus, to direct the audience to focus on something particular in the frame, decreasing the depth of field.
Wide angle lens settings have the opposite characteristics of telephoto settings. With a wide-angle setting, the camera can be used handheld because the camera movement is dampened and they also are very easy to focus.
In contrast with telephoto lenses, wide angle lenses exaggerate distance, that is, they make things seem further apart. In sum, wide angle lenses are more commonly used by professionals because they deliver more creative liberty and they increase the depth of field because getting close to the subject means LESS depth of field. By contrast, moving away means MORE depth of field.
