Differences and Similarities between Photography and Videography
Photography and videography are two disciplines of the media arts that are very closely intertwined. One can think of them as twin sisters who went on their separate ways.
The main difference is the fact that Photography captures one particular moment trapping it forever. On the other hand, Videography is an animated form of still photography, it has a "before" and "after", it sits on a visual progression through time. Nevertheless, both of them come down to the ability to capture an image.
Regarding exposure control, the main differences and similarities between photography and videography are:
Iris (Transmission of light)
- Wide open iris = brighter picture = shallow depth of field = low T/stop
- Small iris = darker picture = full DoF = high T/stop
Shutter-Speed & Shutter-Angle
- Fast shutter-speed = darker picture = less blue = small fraction (1/800-1/1000)
- Slow shutter-speed = brighter picture = more blue = larger fraction (1/60-1/80)
Gain
- High Gain = brighter picture = more noise = high number (1600-3200)
- Low Gain = darker picture = less noise = low number (100-200)
ND Filters
Neutral-density filters are used to reduce or modify the intensity of all wavelengths/colours, in other words, they reduce the amount of light entering the lens.
External light source
In video is used primarily to adjust and correct colour.
